Backcountry is known
as fishing the flats, bridges & channels that make up more than 500
sq. miles of ocean on the Gulf side of the keys. It is also commonly
referred to as the bayside because of the average shallow depths and
the usually calm situation that persists throughout the year.
Backwater or
flats can produce some of the most exciting light tackle sport
fishing in the entire world. A large majority of light tackle world
records have been accomplished in our beautiful island tropical
paradise. The predominate game fish expected to be found in these
waters are Tarpon, Snook, Redfish and Bonefish, with the almost
always available saltwater Trout, Jacks, Snapper, Grouper, Cobia &
oh yes lots of Sharks, I said "lots of Sharks!" Generally speaking a
flats guide boat is about 20 ft. in length and is designed to fish 1
to 2 fishermen at a time. There fast and draw very little water
that's there advantage and gets them through the narrow and often
shallow channels to the best fishing action in just a few minutes.
